Pre-Operative (Pre-Op) Instructions
🗓️ Scheduling Your Surgery
- The day you make the decision to proceed with surgery, a tentative date will be set for your procedure.
- This date will be held for you pending any required preoperative clearance and insurance approval.
- You will need to be seen by the preoperative clinic 1–2 weeks before surgery for:
- Lab work
- Any necessary testing (e.g., EKG, chest X-ray, etc.)
💊 Medication Guidelines
- Blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, etc.) may need to be stopped 5–7 days before surgery.
- If you have diabetes, your medication may need to be adjusted—follow specific instructions provided by the pre-op clinic.
- Continue other medications unless advised otherwise.
- Bring a list of all medications and supplements to your pre-op appointment.
🚫 Fasting (NPO) Instructions
- Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your procedure (unless otherwise instructed).
- You may be allowed clear liquids up to 2–4 hours before surgery—verify with your provider.
- No gum, mints, candy, or smoking after midnight.
🧼 Hygiene
- Shower the night before and/or morning of surgery using antibacterial soap (if directed).
- Do not apply makeup, lotion, deodorant, nail polish, or perfume on the day of surgery.
- Remove jewelry, piercings, contact lenses, dentures, and prosthetics before arrival.
🚗 Transportation & Support
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery.
- You cannot drive yourself or take public transportation alone after receiving anesthesia.
- Someone should be available to stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.
👕 Clothing & What to Bring
- Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.
- Leave valuables at home.
- Bring your photo ID, insurance card, and any forms given by your healthcare provider.
🕒 Arrival Time
- Arrive at the surgical facility two hours before your scheduled procedure.
- This time is needed for check-in, consent forms, and final assessments.
